A Level Engineering trip to the House of Lords

On Tuesday 30 November a group of Upper Sixth A Level Physics students visited the House of Lords to attend an All-Party Parliamentary Engineering Group lunch to discuss the developments in nuclear energy.

We listened to talks from Karen Wheeler of Radioactive Waste Management, Paul Stein the Chief of Technology for Rolls Royce, and Andrew Cockcroft a senior manager at EDF. The talks were followed by questions from the audience which challenged the speakers’ proposals and opened the discussion up to the many criticisms surrounding nuclear energy.

Paul Stein was particularly convincing about the use of Rolls Royce’s Small Modular Reactors and how instrumental they could be in producing large amounts of low-carbon energy.

The day provided a new look on the developments of engineering, and it was inspirational seeing such a wide range of young engineers so dedicated to the future of renewable and green energy.
