The ARTiculation Prize is a national speaking competition for young people to express their views and ideas on art and architecture. I chose to give my ten-minute speech on the Reichstag building in Berlin and its redevelopment by Foster + Partners. The process involved research and consideration of all the elements of the building; from its role in the history of Germany to the philosophy behind the new design, and how it has been used to portray the new face of Germany post-reunification. I participated in two of the three rounds at Wychwood School and the Ashmolean Museum, and had the opportunity to hear the other participants’ speeches which covered a range of topics from Diane Arbus photographs to The Shining film scenes. Taking part was a great experience and I really enjoyed the opportunity not only to discuss my own ideas about art with other young people who are interested in it, but also hear their opinions and be exposed to new views about artwork which I knew little about.
