On 14 March twenty intrepid students of Latin and Greek ventured to the Classics Faculty in Oxford for the annual reading competition, run by Oxford Classical Association. Several local schools took part and the standard was very high. Our students performed well, despite the fact that some of them had to memorize their passages, and the staff accompanying the trip felt that several had given flawless renderings of the texts.
The judges from the University of Oxford were looking for accuracy of pronunciation but also dramatic expression of the passages. Six of our students won prizes and others, particularly senior students, also gave outstanding performances. The prize winners were:
Emily (11M) – Junior Latin Prose – 1st prize
Bróna (11M) – Junior Latin Prose – 2nd prize
Giulia (9M) – Junior Latin Dialogue – 2nd prize
Agnes (9J) – Junior Latin Dialogue – 2nd prize
Katharina (9K) – Junior Greek Dialogue – 2nd prize
Maddie (9M) – Junior Greek Dialogue – 2nd prize
Our congratulations go to these students, and also to everyone who was brave enough to take part.
