Cyber First competition

Cryptography … digital forensics … detecting cybercrime … ethical hacking … malware analysis

GCHQ runs an annual competition to encourage Year 8 students to consider careers in cyber security. 1600 teams from schools all over the UK entered the qualifying round of the competition in January. Only 128 qualified for the semi-final, including team ‘Bananya Cats’ from St Helen’s. The semi-final was a tense and nail-biting affair as teams jostled for position on the leader board. After the competition the team received their badges and certificates.

‘I really liked it and it was a great learning experience. I found out how coding and decoding are important in real life.’

‘I managed to solve tricky problems using IP addresses and QR codes and I learned a lot.’

‘It was really excited and has inspired me to consider a career in this field.’
