How to find us

Girls Go Gold conference

On Thursday 12 September, a group of St Helen’s sports scholars and A-level PE students travelled to the University of Bath for the Girls Go Gold conference.

The day began with an inspiring speech from Pamela Cookey, an ex-England netball captain who spoke about relevant topics such as her path to the top and how she coped with injuries. It was particularly useful to hear motivating messages from such a successful woman.

Our first activity saw us working alongside a sports scientist in the Bath sports science labs. We learned how the body is able to cope with the extreme demands of sport. We were lucky enough to see one of our students have a go at the Windgate test – proving peak power and drop off ability. We then had a campus tour of the university which was amazing and very useful for the Upper Sixth (even though Mrs Trumper showed the most enthusiasm!).

In the afternoon, all students took part in a netball session conducted by some university players. After this intense exercise we were treated with yoga where we all stretched out, relaxed and found ourselves in some interesting positions!

The day ended with a speech from the first ever woman to cross the Antarctic. The whole day showcased the amazing power of women and we were very glad to be a part of it. We all hope to use this day as motivation to be the next woman breaking records or crossing a continent!
