On a gloriously sunny afternoon, St Helen’s Quad was transformed into an outdoor jazz café. With Pimms and strawberries on offer, our guests were also treated to a feast of wonderful music. There were soloists, vocal and instrumental, performing works by Jerome Kern, Leonard Bernstein, Gordon Jenkins and George Gershwin, and Molly in Year 8 enchanted the audience by accompanying herself in a performance of Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi. Small ensembles of voices, saxophones, flutes, bassoons, violins and clarinets performed repertoire ranging from the Jazz Tchaikovsky Suite to Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man and Jump, Jive An’ Wail. The fabulous Big Band really set the party atmosphere with their two sets which included Tom Jones’ It’s Not Unusual (featuring L6 vocal soloist Nia Perks), I Got You by James Brown and the firm favourite – Uptown Funk written by Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson. It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon!
