The Joint Choral Society is open to staff, parents and pupils from St Helen’s and Abingdon School and this year it was Abingdon’s turn to host the performance. Mr Adam Treadaway directed the evening which opened with an extremely sensitive presentation of Puccini’s Crisantemi by the joint strings players from the two schools. This was followed by the Joint Chamber choir – a 12-voice ensemble of senior students – who joined with the strings for Mozart’s sublime motet Ave Verum Corpus. The main event of the evening saw all performers joining forces for Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass. In this work, the contemporary Norwegian composer describes the music he has written as ‘the development of the mass as a metaphor for human development from child to adult’. It was the perfect choice for the occasion and was performed beautifully under Mr Treadaway’s expert leadership. Well done to everyone involved in a memorable evening.
