Passing on the boater

May 2022

It’s been a mixture of emotional farewells and cheerful hellos these past few weeks as our departing prefect team hands over their duties to a new line-up of House Prefects, Sports Captain, School Council leader, Charity prefects and many more. Head Girl 2021–22, Olivia, and Communications and Marketing Prefect, Hannah, reflect on their time at St Helen’s following the outgoing prefect tea event.

Becoming Head Girl has been the most incredible experience and something I will always cherish through the memories I have made. From Year 7 induction days to the final prefect handover assembly, it has been an incredible year and the perfect end to my St Helen’s journey.

Of course, I owe it all to the prefect team. Together we have taken advantage of the free food at school events, supported each other through the boater shortage, and laughed endlessly together at end of year lunches. I have also had some amazing support from members of the school community. From Mrs Dougall, Mrs Bedford, Emilie, my teachers and form tutor and my incredible deputies Millie and Alice who have collectively got me through tough times.

The prefect handover assembly was the start of many ‘lasts’ at St Helen’s and I’m so proud of the change we have made not just over the past year, but throughout our whole time here. I wish the Head Girl 2022–23 Emily and her team luck for the coming year, knowing they will do a fantastic job. Thank you all for giving me this opportunity and for the most unforgettable year.

Olivia, Head Girl 2021–22

The outgoing prefect tea was a wonderful way to mark the end of our service to the School. The spread of sandwiches, meringues and pavlova were absolutely delicious, and it was great to be able to share memories and stories with all of our parents in school.

The highlight of the afternoon had to be finally getting a signature prefect boater to keep (an unfortunate and strange consequence of the pandemic)! It'll be strange to see the new prefects running events, but we all wish them the absolute best in taking over the roles – they will do brilliantly!
