Over the course of two sessions, 40 students from the Abingdon School Partnership (Larkmead, John Mason, Fitzharrys, Abingdon and St Helen’s) took part in the new Peer Mentoring Scheme that is being implemented in all the schools. The sessions were run by Nick Luxmoore, a psychologist with over 40 years’ experience of working with young people and the people who support them. He led us through several activities in an effort to increase our empathy and emotional intelligence as well as to improve our listening skills. We were taught to listen with our eyes – the idea that picking up on subtle changes in appearance and demeanour can be the first step into providing your peers with more help. The scheme will begin officially in September and we will work with new students in the School, specifically in lower years, helping them get settled in and giving them someone to talk to if there are any bumps along the road.
