Welcome to this week’s Remote St Helen’s offering from Team Piano! We hope it will cheer you up in this, the eighth week of lockdown. Working through Microsoft Teams has provided us pianists with very particular challenges. Needing not just to work face to face of course but trying desperately to find camera angles on our laptops, tablets and phones that allow views of hands on keyboards has been tricky, and the discovery that not all our instruments are in tune with each other has added to our difficulties.
The students are working so very hard despite all this, building practice time into their academic schedules and relishing the extra time for the solace of music-making that has come as a bonus to many of us in these weeks away from school. Some have been able to record themselves performing pieces that were last term already being prepared for tonight’s concert, or planned for exams later in the term, with a few works newly learnt since the start of lockdown. We wanted to share with you some really excellent performances that will hopefully brighten your Tuesday evening and remind us all that music really does soothe the troubled soul.
