The first senior concert of the year took place, rather appropriately, on St Cecilia’s Day. The evening showcased our more advanced instrumental and vocal groups and the performers rose to the challenges of some difficult repertoire, performing with great poise and musicality. The first half featured beautiful singing from Chapel Choir and Cantores with contemporary repertoire from Bob Chilcott, Simon and Garfunkel and Barielles and Britell. The brass band’s spirited performance of Mars from The Planets contrasted beautifully with the intimate rendition of Gershwin’s Lullaby performed by Camerata. After the interval, U6 music scholar Bethan Kelly gave a beautiful and extremely moving performance of Massenet’s Meditation with First Orchestra who also played the overture from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro with great energy.
Ensemble Bar 61 sang two nightingale themed songs, displaying great sensitivity to balance and musical phrasing and the concert ended with two rousing items from Concert Band – Leroy Anderson’s The Typewriter (featuring U6 music scholar Ellie Woods on solo clarinet) and music from the film Back to the Future. The evening was most enjoyable and congratulations must go to everyone involved.
