As part of Geography Worldwise Week, Year 9 students took part in a poverty simulation experience run by the charity Empathy Action. The aim of the event was to allow students to gain a greater understanding of what it means to be in poverty as well as prompting them to think about how they might respond. The girls were placed in family groups and had to work to make a living in a Bangladeshi slum. Chapel had been transformed beyond recognition to make the experience as realistic as possible. The girls were asked to reflect on their experience and many were struck by the stressful psychological implications of their experience. Follow up work considered the question ‘So what..?’ and the girls have made pledges about how they will respond to poverty in the future.
