Partnerships with the older generation
Sixth Form students spend time in two nearby care homes weekly to lead activities with residents. During this year-long placement strong relationships are formed and students are able to offer specific skills such as art or music as they work alongside carers. Younger students also visit to perform music to entertain the residents.
‘I did my community service at a care home for patients with dementia. Interacting with the patients and caregivers has improved my interpersonal skills and taught me how to communicate effectively. It has given me a great insight into how quickly a disease can progress and change the patient’s life. I have really enjoyed it and the placement helped me to think about my university choices.’ Rebecca, Upper Sixth
