Clubs and societies

This club is for anyone who wants to crochet, knit, etc!  If you are looking for some relaxation amidst a busy day, or are in need of some inspiration with a current project, CaKe is the place to be!

Running and cross-country prove to be popular both as activities in their own right and as a supplement to fitness training. Students have the opportunity to compete in cross-country fixtures locally, regionally and nationally.

Chemistry society that prepares students for national competitions, extend knowledge and practical skills beyond the A level specification, as well as giving students the chance to independently pursue their own interests by researching current advances.

Dance clubs run throughout the year by our specialised dance teacher. Students have the opportunity to perform in annual productions and local, regional and national competitions.

For students who wish to explore theory and practical aspects of biology beyond the A level curriculum.

Public speaking and debating clubs help students to develop confidence across a range of core oracy skills. Students compete annually in competitions run by the English-Speaking Union and Oxford Union School Debating.

Join wizards, warlocks, fighters and rogues in the adventure of a lifetime. Carve your character’s path in a fantasy world that will test your strategic thinking, collaboration skills, and resourcefulness.

Engage in A level Economics and A level Business themes whilst building real-world skills when collaborating in the GAIN Investment Challenge and Tycoon Enterprise competition.

Students delve into university-level theory and real-world policy debates, taking part in the Wharton Investment Challenge and IEA Budget Challenge to sharpen analytical thinking and deepen their understanding of global decision-making.

An opportunity to engage with the Bible’s message about God, faith and life.

Run by members of Sixth Form interested in pursuing a career in engineering but open to all members of the School, Engineering Society promotes and explores opportunities in this extremely diverse career field via inschool activities, talks, visits and project work with local engineering firms.

Students group together with the support of parents to compete at various school equestrian events. This activity carries an additional cost.

Engaging students with global issues such as gender inequality in Afghanistan and sustainable food sources in Iceland. Through interactive debates and role-play as government officials, members develop critical thinking and decision-making skills.

For anyone who is curious to explore aspects of Christian faith – share thoughts and ask questions.

Step into the world of fashion design in this creative and hands-on club where students explore fashion illustration, sewing techniques, and embroidery skills. From sketching stylish silhouettes to stitching intricate fabric samples, you’ll learn how to bring your own designs to life.

Fencing Club is run by an external coach who offers students the opportunity to learn and develop new skills in a sport that they may never have tried before.

Explore filmic works over a wide range of genres, discussing all aspects of their creation such as cinematography, sound design, and narrative.

Performing at Christmas and in the two senior concerts of the year. First Orchestra is for our most advanced orchestral players and often provides concerto opportunities for senior music scholars.

The Fitness Suite offers state-of-the-art equipment and technology to further opportunities for students during lessons, in Learn to Train (Year 7), the developing athlete programme, and for recreation and elite sport. Designed to be welcoming and accessible, this is a highly popular facility offering both individual training and fitness classes.

Flute Ensemble are coached by a Senior Music Scholar, playing a wide range of music and performing at a number of events.

Football takes place all year round. It is an increasingly popular sport and fixtures are played in local, regional and national competitions.

A popular and healthy lifestyle activity, this club runs in the group cycling room.

Guitar Ensemble welcomes acoustic, electric and bass guitar players.

Gymnastics is a popular sport at St Helen’s and clubs are run by a gymnastics coach. There are clubs for all year groups and we train junior and senior squads who compete in local, regional and national competitions.

Explore the fascinating world of Greek and Roman mythology through fun, hands-on activities. Design displays of ancient gods, make mosaics, sample Roman food and even film a myth-inspired movie.

Hockey is predominantly indoor, with friendly and regional fixtures taking place. Participation in outdoor hockey also occurs in the county rounds of competition.

This includes students, parents and staff from St Helen’s and other local schools, performing a large-scale choral and orchestral work in November each year.

The MFL Society runs joint events with Abingdon School such as the annual MFL Society Dinner, a movie evening and seminars on translation or literature.

A welcoming space for budding artists in Years 5 and 6 to explore different art materials and techniques – perfect for creative play and skill-building.

The Junior Chemistry Club is run by Lower Sixth students and allows Juniors to experience fun and exciting chemisty experiments.

Read and talk about new and classic children’s books, play book-based games and take part in creative games and activities to learn how the library works.

One of the highlights of the Junior calendar, this production uses the talents of all the students in Years 5 and 6 to create a musical theatre spectacular performed to parents at the end of Trinity term.
