Plant points challenge

Brigid Alpers, Head of Food and Nutrition

Did you know that to feed your friendly gut bacteria we need a wide variety of plant foods?

The list below is an example of how it might look to get 30 different types of plant foods across the week. Science shows that the more diverse the range of plant foods we eat, the more diverse our gut bacteria.

In lessons, we have been using loads of fruit and vegetables, making ramen (Year 10 Cooking Club), Vietnamese rice paper rolls (Year 7), winter fruit salad (Year 6) and vegetable noodle dishes (Year 9).

We continue to encourage students to top up their lunch plates with salads, vegetables and fruit every day!

This is what 30 plant foods looks like across the week:

VEGETABLES – Tomatoes, mushrooms, broccoli, pepper, sweetcorn, spinach, potato, onion, peas, carrot.

FRUIT  – Grapes, apricot, strawberries, watermelon, blueberries, raspberries, apple, banana, orange, kiwi.

GRAINS – Oats, brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat, wholewheat flour.

LEGUMES, NUTS & SEEDS – Chickpeas, lentils, tinned beans, pack of seeds, pack of nuts (mixed for extra points!)
