The School was privileged to welcome Dr Lucy Worsley, academic, author and presenter, for a captivating talk on Jane Austen.
This event kicked off our celebration of 250 years since Austen’s birth, and A level literature students along with Years 10 and 11, and parents were invited to attend. Dr Worsley talked about her recent book ‘Jane Austen at Home’, and really brought to life the deeper story of this renowned author. As an expert in architectural history, she marked Jane’s life through the several houses that she had lived in, explaining to the audience how these locations and experiences influenced her novels. Dr Worsley’s enthusiasm and passion surrounding this topic provided a very entertaining and engaging talk, with frequent moments of humour and fascinating unknown facts shared about Austen. She answered a number of questions from students with ease, and her great insight provided useful information for Year 10 and 11 students who are reading Pride and Prejudice for their GCSEs.
After the talk, the audience was invited to join Dr Worsley for a book-signing session, with local booksellers ‘Mostly Books’ on hand to sell copies of her books ‘The Austen Girls’ and ‘Jane Austen at Home’.
