Climate Change Awareness Fortnight: Spotlight on Eco-Anxiety

Eco-anxiety is a concern which is increasingly affecting young people worldwide.

Our Sixth Form Geography Society held an engaging talk during Assembly that explored what eco-anxiety means for our school community. They examined key data (both encouraging and challenging), and highlighted practical steps we can take to alleviate these concerns. One such initiative focused on sustainable fashion, demonstrating how everyday choices can make a positive impact.

In Geography lessons, students delved deeper into the topic by sharing personal experiences of eco-anxiety and discussing strategies to manage these feelings. Across the curriculum, departments contributed to a rich variety of activities, including environmental poetry, artistic responses to COP30, investigations into global warming “fake news” and conspiracy theories, and reflections on Hindu perspectives on caring for the environment.

A highlight of the fortnight was welcoming Abi Brown from Oxford University, who shared insights from her DPhil research on food systems and climate change. Her talk shed light on the influence of COP conferences and the challenges posed by the fossil fuel industry in achieving meaningful progress.

We hope this fortnight has reinforced the importance of taking positive action to combat climate change, while equipping students with knowledge and strategies to manage eco-anxiety. Together, we can turn awareness into action.
