Battling soaring temperatures and fierce competition, the Junior athletes delivered one of their finest performances of the season.
It was a scorching day at the Regional Athletics Championships, but the Junior athletes (Years 7-8) delivered a fantastic performance to secure second place and qualify for the national finals on the 4 July as a high scorer. Their impressive efforts see them ranked top 13 in the country! The team climbed from sixth place to finish as runners-up thanks to all of their outstanding performances.
Two school records were broken during the event. Year 8 athlete, Grace R, set a new school record in the 300m with a time of 46.8 seconds, whilst Year 7’s Jemima W broke the 1500m record with the time 5 minutes and 4.2 seconds.
The inter girl team also competed well in a highly competitive field, scoring sixth out of eight teams and contributing to an excellent day of athletics for St Helen and St Katharine.
Congratulations to all athletes for their determination, resilience and excellent performances in particularly challenging conditions.
I really enjoyed competing for my school team, alongside the inter girls, as they shared their experience. Although athletics is often considered to be an individual sport, it felt more like a team sport, and I am incredibly proud of the outstanding performances of my teammates and am thankful for the support of the PE staff and coaches. We are all very excited for nationals, as it is an incredible opportunity to compete at a high level.Georgie S, Year 8
