Senior sailors tackle tricky conditions at Itchenor Sailing Club

Gail Wilson, Head of Outdoor Learning

At the end of June our Senior Sailors competed in the 72nd Senior Schools Championship at Itchenor Sailing Club.

Our Senior Sailors arrived at Itchenor the day before the championship for a day of training. Launching from the Sailing Club, the day was spent practicing race starts, finding transit points and planning lay lines for effectively using the tide to sail an effective course.  Under the watchful eye of experienced coaches Jess and Mal, this time allowed opportunity for the 3 SHSK helm and crew pairs to familiarise themselves with their boats and the river/harbour layout. Lunch was taken on East Head beach and the fleet returned up river with a challenging sail, wind against tide.

Racing started on the Monday with all 3 Helkats boats ready for the off. After a 60-minute postponement due to the weather, racing got under way.

Our students battled ever-changing conditions over the two racing days, well done to all those involved!
