On Friday 29 November, we welcomed Radley students and teachers for a lively, thought-provoking debate, followed by a sophisticated dinner in the chapel.
Some very well-written speeches were given from both sides on the motion “This house believes that AI in the military causes more harm than good” which certainly gave us all a lot of food for thought as AI becomes more and more a part of our daily lives.
The mixed teams – two boys and two girls in each, were able to work together well to form well-calculated, strong arguments for both sides. But it was the opposing team – Frida, Jemima, Barnaby and Adrian who were voted the winners, one of their strongest arguments being that the predictability of AI in terms of its programming arguably makes it safer than an emotionally exhausted human solider whose actions in a time of such distress are far less predictable.
We were then very lucky to enjoy dinner in the chapel, beautifully decorated by the Benedict Committee who deserve a special mention for doing such a good job at coordinating the event. It was an evening of good food, wonderful conversation and a rather competitive quiz with Radley students, something we hope to be able to repeat very soon!
