David Endacott of the Oxfordshire Bat Group visited SHSK…accompanied by a few tiny friends.
Juniors were delighted to learn more about bats and to meet the little creatures who had all been rescued by the organisation. Mr Endacott taught the students about the different species of bats, from pipistrelles to long-eared to Serotines and explained how bat conservation works.
The students also had the chance to hear recordings of ‘echolocation’ – the sophisticated biological sonar bats use to navigate and hunt in total darkness by emitting high-pitched ultrasonic calls and interpret the returning echoes. Bat fact file: 14 of the 18 species can be found in Oxfordshire!
