Junior sailors take to the water this Trinity term

Gail Wilson, Head of Outdoor Learning

This Trinity term, Years 5 and 6 have had the opportunity to develop their sailing abilities.

The students were led by qualified Royal Yachting Association (RYA) instructors from the Oxford Sail Training Trust. Mrs Wilson, Head of Outdoor Learning shares her thoughts on the experience so far.

‘It has been a cold and breezy start to our Junior sailing this term, despite the sunshine. With easterly offshore winds, we have been limited in our use of craft and sails, however this has not prevented us from getting afloat.

Using Lazer Fun boats, which have a stable catamaran design, students have been introduced to the basic principles of sailing. Steering, turning and trimming the sail to manage their boat effectively around a figure of eight course, students have been learning the “rules of the road” and sailing etiquette i.e. not crashing into someone else or cutting across their water’.

Sailing continues for other junior students next week as this cohort move to Archery and Orienteering for the remainder of the Trinity Term.
