Year 10 Art and Ceramics students enjoyed a trip to Cornwall visiting art galleries, sketching and workshops on the beach.
On Thursday, we visited the art exhibitions at Hauser and Wirth, where we enjoyed learning about the meanings behind Angel Otero’s artwork and how he uses objects in his work to represent and symbolise his childhood memories.
On Friday, after sketching in the gardens, we went around Penlee House art gallery which had many artworks created in Cornwall and later went on to Tremenheere Sculpture Garden. There, we enjoyed sketching from the gallery and seeing the sculptures in the gardens.
The following day, we went down to St Ives and after some sketching on the harbour. We went to the beach workshop where we tried activities and created ink mark-making artworks from listening to the sound of waves. We also created 3D sculptures in the sand from discarded objects and made relief impressions in the sand before finishing with acrylic paintings of the beach. Later, we visited Barbra Hepworth’s house where we loved sketching some of her sculptures in the peaceful garden. We then went around Tate St Ives were there was artwork from Peter Lanyon and Margaret Mellis who both inspired some of our artwork in the beach workshop. There was also an impressive, immersive installation which was a passage of tubes which were brightly lit and coloured.
Finally, on the way home on Sunday, we visited Roche Court where we were shown around the sculptures in the gardens and did some final sketches before heading home. It was a lovely Art trip full of sketching and exploration of artists, their work and visiting some amazing places.
