Year 8 Latin trip to Butser Iron Age Farm and Roman Villa

SHSK School

Butser is an experimental archaeology site where they test interpretations of archaeological artefacts by reconstructing and putting them to use.

The site includes an Iron Age British village and farm, with traditional crops and animal breeds, and there is also a reconstructed Roman villa. The trip supported students’ study of Roman Britain and included a tour of the villa and the opportunity to look around Iron Age roundhouses. The girls also had fun spinning sheep’s wool, painting frescoes and playing Roman board games. It was a very atmospheric experience, which gave the students a glimpse into a long lost way of life.
