Singers Concert 2023

On Wednesday evening last week, solo singers and the vocal consorts from Years 7–Upper Sixth joined together to showcase some of the vocal talent across the School. Sandwiched between performances from The Dominant Sevenths (Year 11) and Bar 61, every student shared music they have been learning with an attentive and inspired audience in the Science Atrium.

It was particularly lovely to hear each performer talk about their music, with some girls also sharing their reasons for singing specific songs. Some of the students involved have reflected on their experiences of the evening.

Isabella (10M) said: ‘The Singers Concert displayed performers from across the School who took the audience on an emotional journey. I particularly enjoyed performances from Lower Sixth student Darcey, whose legato line and stunning voice showcased the beautiful “O del mio dolce ardor” and Eleanor and Miriam who performed the “Sull aria” duet from Le Nozze di Figaro, because I love the singing conversation with a slight comedic yet expressive message to the piece.

Middle School singers performed pieces including the more traditional “The Banks of Allan Water” and Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away from Me” which were light-hearted and relaxed, and the French song “Jeunes Fillettes”, arranged by Weckerlin. I sang “Out of My Dreams” from Oklahoma, a smooth, lyrical and emotional piece of music. I really enjoyed the challenge of taking the audience with me into Laurey’s dream.’

Megan (U6F) added: ‘On 4 October, I took part in the Singers Concert in the Science Atrium. It was such an amazing evening, filled with talented young singers from all year groups, emphasising how important music is in bringing people together. As a performer, I get particularly nervous performing in front of people, so having evenings like this is extremely helpful for building my confidence, in a non-judgemental relaxed environment. Thank you to all the music staff that supported this evening, and I am looking forward to many more!’
