This forward-thinking A level in Design and Technology: Product Design offers a solid foundation for students with a strong interest in engineering, product and industrial design and architecture. It provides a comprehensive insight into the processes involved in taking an idea from concept to manufacture, while exploring the role of Designers and Engineers in today’s world.
The course is ideal for students who are not only creative but also enjoy problem-solving, technical drawing and understanding how things work. It builds on knowledge from GCSE Design and Technology and provides an excellent springboard into a wide range of engineering and design-related careers or further study, including mechanical, civil, electrical or product engineering.
You’ll develop key skills in:
- Engineering drawing and CAD modelling
- Materials science and mechanical properties
- Systems and control (including electronics and mechanisms)
- Manufacturing processes (traditional and digital)
- Analytical thinking, iterative design and testing
Course structure
Two small design and make projects in the first term, serving as a means of introducing students to new manufacturing process, whilst providing them with the opportunity to enhance their creative thinking.
- Project 1: interior architectural model, focussing on metal manufacturing processes and scaled modelling to tolerance
- Project 2: child’s seating project. Modelling, testing, developing and manufacturing a fully functioning prototype
Assessment
- NEA (Non-Exam Assessment): 50%
A substantial design-and-make project where you’ll solve a real-world problem using engineering principles and design thinking - One written exam paper: 50%
Assessing your knowledge of core technical principles, design theory, and commercial manufacturing processes
While the course includes a strong creative element, there is a significant emphasis on theory, systems and mathematical application. A grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics is strongly recommended to support your success.
