Michaelmas term sports newsletter 2023

From the Director of Sport

Welcome to the Michaelmas term 2023 version of the sports newsletter. This term has seen over 160 fixtures played in multiple sports across all age ranges, as well as two lacrosse tours: a pre-season trip for the seniors and an October half-term version for Years 8 and 9. Both tours were to Cheshire – many thanks to Oxton, Moreton and Harrogate Lacrosse Clubs for their hospitality. Many thanks to the staff who attended these trips and made them a great experience for all.

We welcomed Ms Barrett and Miss Greenslade in September as permanent members of staff. Ms Barrett is our professional netball coach and Miss Greenslade is a teacher of PE with a lacrosse specialism. It has been fantastic to also have Miss Herold (SHSK class of 2021) joining us for a term to work with us in the PE Department and to help students improve in all sports and activity. We thank her for all her hard work and say a fond ‘adieu’ as she heads off on her travels around Asia and beyond. We wish her safe travels and all the very best. We also welcome a new dance teacher, Mr Nyroy Dixon, who joins us in the new year as a permanent member of staff to teach curriculum lessons as well as run clubs and competitions.

We have also been fortunate to host many indoor hockey competitions for the county and regional competitions and continue our partnership work with local primary and secondary schools – read all about it in the newsletter.

The PE Department has also recently purchased a Veo sports camera to aid the recording and analysis of match play and other sports performance. This will be used to aid self-reflection on performance and will be a key tool in GCSE and A level PE.

We have recently established a new Instagram account to celebrate students’ achievements, fixtures and events that take place across the PE Department. Follow @shsksport to see what happens day to day.

The extracurricular timetable has been sent out to students ready to start clubs on the first day back after the Christmas break on Tuesday 9 January. Please note that sports hall activities will not start until Thursday 18 January due to mock exams taking place. The morning tennis squad sessions and tennis lessons will resume the week commencing 29 January.

As always we wish you and the students a restful break and a happy new year.

Charlotte Barras, Director of Sport
