We are passionate about physics and about inspiring students to understand the world around them.
Through practical investigation, problem-solving and the exploration of real-world applications, we aim to develop confident, curious scientists who enjoy asking questions and finding out how things work.
Our department is staffed by four specialist physicists who bring a breadth of knowledge into our fantastically resourced laboratories, helping students to see how the physics they study connects to the wider scientific and technological world.

Academic enrichment
Students in all year groups are encouraged to extend their physics beyond the curriculum through regional and national competitions, including those run by the Institute of Physics and Isaac Physics, as well as participating in activities to celebrate British Science Week and International Women in Engineering Day.
Students in all year groups can also enter the British Physics Olympiad and British Astronomical Olympiad.
Co-curricular
Students can explore their interests through a range of clubs, competitions and activities, including CREST Awards (Years 8–10), the British Physics Olympiad Competitions (all year groups) and our weekly Year 7 Science Club, led by A-level students.
Other opportunities include Year 7 students serving as judges for the Royal Society Young People’s Science Book Prize and The Big Build, our annual whole-school engineering event.
Our flagship Astro Club runs throughout the year for all year groups, with opportunities for stargazing and astrophotography during the winter months and exploration of particle and quantum physics during the lighter evenings.
