Chemistry, cooking and chocolate

On 7 May, students attended an OX14 Learning Partnership talk by Josh Smalley – a Great British Bake-Off finalist and chemist – who explained the fascinating overlap between chemistry and baking.

Lower Sixth chemistry students learned about the intricate dance of tempering chocolate, the chemistry of crafting different caramel textures, and how temperature plays a starring role in the baking world.

One student commented: ‘It was a great opportunity to understand how connected these two worlds of science and baking can be, demonstrating that our passion in other subjects can be linked together. It was inspiring to see chemistry from a different angle, and we now hope to look at our other subjects with a new lens.’
