Drama students went on a trip to the National Theatre in London to see a production of “The Other Place”.
Based on Antigone and directed by Alexander Zeldin, “The Other Place” tells the story of two sisters, Izzy and Annie, reuniting on the anniversary of their father’s death. Exploring themes of mental illness, guilt and grief the play was set in the modern day, which made this tragedy very engaging for us as an audience, bringing to life the shocking and extensive impact of loss. The relatable characters allowed the audience to identify with them, and reinforced the shocking impact of the story, making us think deeply about the important messages of the play. I found the subtle references to the original Greek style of the play particularly intriguing, with some costumes subtly mimicking those of Greek plays. The tragic ending of the production left us all thinking about the interesting techniques utilised and the thought-provoking messages portrayed, leading to some interesting discussions on the way home! We all really enjoyed the experience!
