Many congratulations to Emily (U6) on winning the Gladstone Essay Prize, run by Omnibus Magazine (a classics magazine aimed at Sixth Form students).

It is a significant achievement. The prize was set up in honour of the Prime Minister William Gladstone, shortly after his death and has run ever since.

Her fascinating winning essay was on the topic: ‘Why does the Trojan War provide such fertile ground for modern retellings?’ It was published in the March 2025 issue of Omnibus. Emily received £200 and a copy book plate from the original design.

Emily says: ‘My teachers encouraged me to enter an essay competition as a good super-curricular challenge, and I really didn’t think anything would come of it. To be published in Omnibus, a highly regarded magazine in classical circles aimed at sixth form students, and one which I love reading, is so surreal!’
