Amazing talent and musicianship were on display at the recent Spring Concert. Read student reflections from the evening.
The Spring Concert is an amazing event where musicians come together to perform music, varying from Disney classics to Classical Concertos. A particular highlight is always the Upper Sixth solos, and this year, three of our musicians performed show-stopping concertos, including Marcello’s Oboe Concerto, Mozart’s 4th Violin Concerto and Chaminade’s Concertino. First Orchestra performed ‘Band of Brothers’, which was an amazing way for Ms Rakowski to end her 22 years working at St Helen’s, after being such a supportive and hard-working Director of Music.

The Spring Concert this year was a true triumph! The range of acts from Pan Bands’ upbeat rendition of ‘Under the Sea’ to Joint Chamber Choir’s stunning performance of ‘When I Fall in Love’ meant that there really was something in there for everyone! My personal favourite moment from the evening was performing ‘Putting on the Ritz’ with the Concert Band. The fun yet challenging piece, alongside it being the last time playing with the Concert Band this year, really made it a standout moment. It was also a particularly special concert as it was Ms Rakowski’s last Senior Concert. Throughout Ms Rakowski’s time at St Helen’s, she has inspired so many people and has led the Music Department with such poise and dedication, and it was really lovely to get an opportunity to celebrate her time here.

The Spring Concert was a tremendous experience to take part in. The programme was filled with music from all different genres and involved a range of different instruments. Joint Chamber Choir began the programme with a lovely rendition of ‘Blue Moon’ and ‘When I Fall in Love’. This was a lovely way to start the concert as it gave an insight into all the wonderful music that would follow. A particular highlight was all the concerto movements from our amazing Upper Sixth music scholars, such as Jemima’s violin concerto, Darcey’s oboe concerto and Freya’s flute concerto. These were a testament to their dedication to the Music Department throughout their time. Overall, this concert was a remarkable success, one that couldn’t have gone ahead without the support of Ms Rakowski, who has dedicated 22 years at St Helen’s to helping musicians grow and develop their love for music and whose leadership and insight will be sorely missed.
