The Easter holidays offered students from across the School the chance to go on a variety of trips and expeditions and for English Literature students it was an opportunity to explore the historical city of Bath and the literary wonders abound on a one-of-a-kind retreat. Izzy and Ellie (10L) share more on the events of our Literary Retreat 2023.
The Year 10 and Lower Sixth trip to Bath was an amazing weekend. We had lots of fun dressing up Regency-style, posing with our tour guide Mr Darcy and visiting Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein.
Our personal highlight of the trip was the dancing in the Guildhall Banqueting Room where we learnt a few of the dances that would have been performed at balls during the Regency era – especially Mr Muir’s sea shanty which raised the bar for many other dancers!
There were also lots of opportunities to explore the picturesque city of Bath including some lovely bookstore visits. Thank you to the English Department for a fantastic trip!

Story 1
Rain thundered on the roof. The sky was charcoal grey, clouds casting shrouds over the city. I didn’t believe in ghosts, so I lit the oil lamp and sat by the window, watching people without umbrellas, taking pleasure in their suffering. Windows frosted up from the night approaching. A hand outlined in frost shifted closer.
Story 2
The sounds of his footsteps drifted you to the core as they slowly became louder. Nearer.
Your heart seemed to be beating outside your chest as your nails marked crescents into your palm.
Silence.
The light beneath the door was gone.
He’s here.
Don’t breathe. Don’t move.
Don’t. Die.
