On Wednesday, 5 March, six Year 9 students made their way over to Fitzharrys for the annual Abingdon Young Adult Book Awards.

Students voted on their favourite book from a shortlist and answered quiz questions about the books. The shortlist included: Hyo the Hellmaker by Mina Ikemoto Ghosh, The Last Thing You’ll Hear by Jan Dunning, Songlight by Moira Buffini, Soulmates and Other Ways to Die by Melissa Welliver, Where the Heart Should Be by Sarah Crossan and If My Words Had Wings by Danielle Jawando.

Our team came second in the quiz after a tie with Larkmead. The teams went head-to-head for second place and SHSK correctly answered the question “Which book is considered the first science fiction novel?” (Frankenstein, in case you didn’t know) and secured chocolate prizes for their efforts.

The winners were Europa School who retained the cup for a fourth year. Pippa in Year 9 said she really enjoyed reading the books and enjoyed the close competition with like-minded readers from other local schools. Collectively the students from St Helens, Radley, Europa, John Mason, Larkmead and the hosts Fitzharrys voted Songlight by Moira Buffini.
