Classics reading competition

Diana Spain, Head of Classics

Twenty-five students (Years 9 and 10) visited the Oxford University Classics Faculty to take part in a reading competition with other Oxfordshire schools.

They competed at reading a dialogue, a passage of prose or reciting a passage of verse from memory.

As always, it was hotly contested and SHSK students produced impressive, polished performances, reflecting the effort and practice which went in behind the scenes. Congratulations to all who took part; as one adjudicator memorably put it, it takes great intestinal fortitude to stand up in front of others and do this.

There were some truly memorable performances which combined accuracy, understanding and dramatic intensity.

Particular congratulations to our winners:

Susannah (Y9) 1st place Junior Greek memoriter

Gigi (Y10) 1st place Junior Latin prose

Lucy (Y10) 1st place Junior Greek prose

Mercy (Y10) 2nd place Junior Greek dialogue

Florence (Y10) 2nd place Junior Greek dialogue

Maddy (Y10) 2nd place Junior Greek prose
