Model United Nations Conference at Westminster School

Year 10-Upper Sixth students recently attended the Model United Nations Conference at Westminster School.

The day involved students participating as delegates from different countries and debating global issues in a lively environment alongside students from other schools.

Read a reflection from Emilia (L6) below.

‘My day at Westminster Model United Nations was an eye-opening and enriching experience. Representing Taiwan in the Social, Humanitarian, and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), I engaged in intense debates on assisted dying laws and the use of child soldiers in armed conflict.

‘Speaking during the moderated caucus pushed me out of my comfort zone but boosted my confidence as I articulated Taiwan’s cautious stance. We successfully passed a resolution to strengthen protections around assisted dying while improving global palliative care.

‘A highlight of the day was hearing from former Lib-Dem leader Vince Cable, who shared fascinating insights into the future of international cooperation. In the afternoon, I helped pass an amendment to prosecute those exploiting child soldiers, and despite facing controversial opinions and (and narrowly avoiding a full scale invasion of Mozambique with three security council vetoes) we managed to pass a resolution which would limit the use of child soldiers and prosecute those responsible.

‘Collaborating with other delegates was both challenging and rewarding, reinforcing the importance of diplomacy, active listening, and compromise. The experience left me with a deeper understanding of global issues and the complexities of international relations.’
