The UK’s best schools for cricket have been revealed in The Cricketer’s Schools Guide 2025.
Cricket is offered at St Helen’s from Year 5 all the way through to Sixth Form. Cricketers have the opportunity to play recreationally and competitively. Both indoor and outdoor teams compete in friendly fixtures and are entered into county, regional and national competitions.
This year alone, U15As, Bs and C progressed through to the County Cricket Finals, and the U13As and U15As made it through to regionals. In July, St Helen and St Katharine became the first-ever all-girls’ school in the 161-year history of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack to enter their 1st XI stats.
Additionally, August 2024 saw the departure of St Helen’s first-ever overseas cricket tour to Sri Lanka, during which fifteen students played at General Balagalle Cricket Stadium, a first-class ground where Sri Lanka A play some of their fixtures.
In 2023, St Helen’s U13 and U15 cricket teams were both national champions of the ECB Schools National Indoor Cricket Finals.
Sam Herbert, Head of Cricket, shares his thoughts:
“Over the past three years, since the Covid pandemic, cricket at St Helen’s has blossomed from being a sport for the few to a sport for all. We have grown from having no competitive teams to entering competitions all the way through school, with 16 teams spread across year groups. We have experienced huge successes in both indoor and outdoor cricket, with some highlight block-friendly fixtures against some of the biggest cricket schools in the South. Our biggest success, however, is playing a lead role in the growth of women’s and girls’ cricket in the county, reflected in the numbers of players partaking in Oxfordshire Pathway cricket and club cricket across the region. The school, and every player to represent the school, should be proud of their contribution. It has been a pleasure to be involved and continue to be involved in the growth of cricket at St Helen’s.”
Kitty (U6), Cricket Captain, shares her thoughts:
“Over the past few years, the development of cricket at St Helens has been huge and it has been really exciting to be a part of this journey. To think that four years ago we had never played a hardball cricket fixture, to now having 16 teams is incredible. All those who take part in cricket are so grateful for the parents and staff who supported the funding for our indoor cricket nets which have provided amazing opportunities for practice all year round! Through cricket, we have made so many strong friendships and had so much fun and I think it has helped us become stronger and more resilient people.”
