STEM Dinner

Krishna (L6)

As part of our celebration of British Science Week, the Science Department hosted its first-ever STEM Dinner.

This event celebrated the wonders of Science, Technology and Engineering and Maths, and the power of women in STEM, which we are so proud of here at St Helen’s.

Our fantastic night started with an entertaining reception, where we had delicious ‘pH’ density tower mocktails surrounded by dry ice designed by our chemists, wonderful science ‘novelties’ brought by Dr Matt Pritchard, Science Magician and ‘Curator of Wonder’, who was our brilliant guest speaker for the night, a STEM Sticker Swap, and an interactive live psychology study questioning our food tastes.

Entertainment was not in short supply during the dinner either. Moving from table to table, Dr Matt entertained our curiosity with exciting close-up magic tricks that stretched our thinking in the best possible way! Mr Count and his team had also programmed games on Micro:Bit computers for us to play on the table. Our photo booth was packed with STEM-themed accessories, and even the teachers were challenged by the quiz!

The evening concluded with an inspirational talk from Dr Matt on ‘The Quantum State of Wonder’, where he opened our minds to the simple yet wonderful science that occurs in our daily lives, encouraged us to ‘play attention’, ‘look for the wonder’ and to remember “vuja de”, which is when you see something extraordinary in the ordinary or everyday.

A very special evening.
