This year in poetry with SHSK Laureate

SHSK School

The St Helen’s Laureate is a unique and prestigious student role.

Each year, the post-holder writes creative pieces to mark key moments in the school year and national and global calendars. These are recorded in the Laureate Book, which is passed down from Laureate to Laureate over the years, charting a journey of St Helen’s, its students, and the changing world.

This year we had the pleasure of welcoming Izzy Hankin, U6, as our Laureate.

Over the course of the year, Izzy delivered a multitude of poetry covering themes exploring anti-bullying week, St Kate’s day and Christmas, to name a few. Izzy also was the first St Helen’s Laureate to take part in a poetry evening, a now annual event celebrating not only the Laureate’s work, but also the work of students and staff.

An evening with the St Helen’s Laureate

Izzy Hankin, 2024-25 Laureate

"It has been an honour to have been the St Helen's Laureate 2024/5. The opportunity the role brings in sharing a love of poetry with the school community is truly a special one, and I have really appreciated the creative freedom I have had in bringing my own original spin on the events of the school calendar. I have particularly enjoyed the task of writing around a set theme: it was especially challenging to write a poem for Anti-Bullying Week, but that challenge helped me write some of my favourite work to date. The greatest highlight from my time as Laureate has to be the 'Evening with the St Helen's Laureate'. Having my work published was an amazing opportunity, yet it was hearing brilliant work from staff and students alike that really marked this evening as a special one."
