On Monday 11 November, students performed at a Wind and Brass concert in honour of Remembrance Day. Read their thoughts.
On Monday 11 November, I had the pleasure of performing in the Wind and Brass concert, with the theme of remembrance. The range of instruments was brilliant – from French horns to clarinets to flutes to trombones. I personally played “Aria” by Bozza on the alto saxophone, and some other pieces included “Danny Boy”, “Somewhere” from Westside Story and “Quiet City” by Copland. A highlight for me was the brass band, who played “Smile” arr Stephens, which they played thoughtfully and beautifully. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and thought it was a lovely way to end Remembrance Day.

The Wind and Brass concert this year was truly amazing to take part in. Our theme was ‘In Remembrance’ as it took place on Remembrance Day and I thought the concert provided a really lovely space to reflect on that. There was a large range of instruments at the concert, from trumpets to flutes and oboes to trombones. This provided a really nice variety of timbres and styles of music throughout the night. We also had four different groups performing (Licorice Stix, Brass Band, Vandoren Ensemble and Yanagisawa Quartet) which is always lovely, as you get to hear a large group of people playing together to create a piece of music. I played Quiet City by Copland on my trumpet. I really enjoyed playing this piece as it gave me lots of space to fully express myself. Overall, I really enjoyed the Wind and Brass concert this year due to the perfect theming of the concert and the amazing standard of playing and I can’t wait to do it all again next year!
