Y8 Latin trip to Butser Iron Age Farm and Roman Villa

Y8 braved the rain to explore the reconstructed Iron Age village at Butser.

On a rather grey day, we certainly felt the benefit of sitting around a warm fire in a Celtic roundhouse. We learnt a lot about the use, construction and decoration of the houses, including the value of cow pats, and were shown round by an expert in experimental archaeology. We were also able to tour a reconstructed Roman house to get a sense of the vast cultural differences between the Romans and the Britons. We had a lot of fun painting frescoes with the pigments available to the Romans and also tried our hand at spinning sheep’s wool and jewellery making.
