Year 11 Computer Science students visited the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s Culham Campus Centre for Fusion Research for Women in Engineering Day on Tuesday 25 February.
The centre specialises in cutting edge technology research including in fusion energy, robotics, autonomous vehicles, aerospace and life sciences.
The day consisted of a short talk about fusion and the challenges of robotics in fusion. Students were given tour of both the RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) and JET (Joint European Torus). They were then offered a short early careers session including interview and CV tips from current working scientists. Finally, they were given the opportunity to control some small robot dogs, followed by a soldering workshop.
Read what students thought of the experience:
‘The trip was a brilliant experience and has done lots to increase my interest in robotics’
‘This trip really helped me decide whether I want a career in engineering, also the robot dog is adorable. If all robots look like that, I would not be disappointed if they took over the world’
‘It was exciting to visit the different locations and engaging to learn through the different activities’
