As part of their Personal Development (PD) curriculum, Year 8 participates in an annual Awareness Day.
This day focuses on empowering students with the tools to recognise and articulate support for themselves and their peers. Students engage in a range of activities, students explore social, cultural, communication and disability awareness through open conversation.
This year students heard from Emma Smith, a St Helen’s parent and Board of Trustee member of Down’s Syndrome Oxford and Mrs Bedford, Pastoral Deputy Head. Eddie (Y8) shared: ‘The talk by Mrs Smith was fun, interactive and enlightening. We learnt about the struggles and achievements of someone with Down’s Syndrome and we all learnt a lot. Mrs Bedford talked about real-life scenarios related to disability and ethnicity. We shared ideas with each other about how we would react to the different scenarios.’
