At St Helen and St Katharine, we believe that art is for everyone, not just those who see themselves as artists, but for all students who will go on to shape the world in creative, innovative ways. In today’s rapidly evolving career market, where industries value adaptability, problem-solving and original thinking, artistic skills are more relevant than ever. Whether in design, technology, media, business or beyond, visual literacy and creative confidence give our students a competitive edge.
Our Art Department fosters this mindset, encouraging curiosity, courage and originality. Academic excellence in Art is built on independent learning and expert teaching, ensuring students engage meaningfully with the world around them. Located on the top floor of the School’s original Edwardian building, our well-equipped studios offer a dynamic space for exploration and expression. We also collaborate closely with the Design and Technology (DT) Department, enabling students to push creative boundaries and bring ambitious ideas to life.
We believe art should be inclusive and accessible, which is why our open-call exhibitions welcome all students, regardless of age, experience or whether they formally study art, to showcase their work. This approach fosters a democratic and inspiring artistic community where every student can share their creative voice.
At St Helen and St Katharine, Art is more than a subject—it’s a way of thinking, seeing and preparing for the future.

Academic enrichment
At St Helen and St Katharine, we provide a wide range of activities, trips and events that inspire and broaden our students’ artistic horizons. Years 7–9 visit local galleries, while Years 10 and above explore further with a residential trip to Cornwall for Year 10 and a cultural excursion to a European city for the Sixth Form.
Students also engage with practising artists through workshops, gaining hands-on experience in various fields. Recent events included blacksmithing with Moggy Metals, textile design with Michael Brennand-Wood, photography with Christopher Baines and art history with Lizzie Rowe.
Students are actively encouraged to enter prestigious competitions and exhibitions, with their work showcased in Young Art Oxford and the Royal Academy Young Artist exhibition. These opportunities provide invaluable exposure and help develop confidence, ambition and a deeper understanding of the creative industries.
Extracurricular
The Art Department is for everyone, regardless of experience. Art and Ceramics clubs for Years 7–9 run throughout the year, offering a welcoming space for creativity. GCSE support classes provide extra studio time for exam students, and Years 8 and 9 have an invite-only club for those seeking more advanced challenges.
We offer Bronze and Silver Arts Award, empowering students to take on leadership roles and build their creative skills. Our open-call exhibitions encourage all students to submit their work, while collaborations with the Drama Department allow them to create sets and props for school productions. Whether you’re exploring or refining your skills, there’s a place for you to thrive in the Art Department.
