Biology

Welcome to biology – where science comes alive! We aim to inspire students to learn about the variety of life on this planet, the complex interactions between species and the intricate detail of the inner workings of cells and organisms. We believe that biology is for everybody, and we hope that our broad and varied curriculum will engage and challenge all students, as well as developing their practical techniques and problem-solving skills.

Our team of experienced teachers are passionate about biology and aim to make lessons fun and exciting for all. We undertake practical work whenever possible, including microscopy, dissection, microbiology, fieldwork, enzyme studies and qualitative testing. All our lessons are taught in our spacious and well-equipped laboratories.

We also encourage students to attend lectures by speakers both attending the School and in the local area; recent talks at have included Professor Teresa Lambe from the Oxford Vaccine Group and Oxford University’s Sir Martin Landray at nearby Abingdon School.

We participate in a range of competitions including the GCSE Biology Challenge, Biology Olympiad, RAL School Science Prize and British Science Week Poster Competition.

A range of exciting trips are organised to support our curriculum beyond the classroom., Year 8 students visit We the Curious Science Centre in Bristol, while students in Years 10 and 11 attend GCSE Science Live! lectures and members of our Sixth Form complete a fieldwork day at Harcourt Arboretum.

Extracurricular

Our new student-led biology magazine, ‘Evolve’, is produced in collaboration with other local schools to showcase articles on a range of biology topics – from earthworms to artificial intelligence.
