We are proud of the diverse range of degrees our students pursue after studying A Level Art, demonstrating the broad value of the subject that extends far beyond “being able to draw.” From Fine Art and Design to Architecture, Engineering and Liberal Arts, the skills developed in Fine Art are transferable and highly valued in many fields.
At St Helen and St Katharine, we don’t just teach students how to master techniques—we equip them with the ability to think creatively, solve problems and adapt to an ever-changing world. Whether pursuing a career in the arts or in another profession, A Level Fine Art empowers students to explore, innovate and shape their futures.
Topics studied
A Level Fine Art at St Helen and St Katharine offers a dynamic and exciting opportunity to take your creativity to the next level. The course is structured around two key components: a Personal Investigation (60%) and an Externally Set Task (40%), designed to help you grow as an independent artist while receiving continuous support and guidance from our experienced staff.
In the Personal Investigation, you’ll create a portfolio of practical work, ranging from sketchbooks to larger pieces, alongside a related study, which is an analytical essay that connects your work to the practices and contexts of other artists. This component encourages deep reflection on your creative journey and helps you develop a thoughtful, well-rounded approach to your art.
The Externally Set Task provides a range of themes to choose from, each offering textual and visual starting points, briefs and stimuli. You’ll select a theme to develop further, building on the skills you’ve developed throughout the course. This culminates in a 15-hour exam, giving you the chance to showcase your personal artistic development in a controlled, time-bound setting.
Throughout the course, we’re here to support you at every stage. Our experienced staff provide tailored guidance, helping you to refine your ideas, experiment with new media and develop your own artistic voice. Whether it’s working with paint, plaster, textiles or photography, we’ll help you explore different techniques and materials, ensuring that your creative vision is fully realised. You’ll be encouraged to push boundaries, challenge yourself and grow as both an artist and a thinker, all while being supported in a nurturing and inspiring environment.
