Physics (AQA)

We are proud to offer an A level Physics course, taught by an all-female team of physics specialists who are passionate about physics and committed to helping our students reach their full potential.

Our curriculum is built on the core knowledge of GCSE Physics, including mechanics, materials, waves and electricity, yet brings in the new and exciting worlds of quantum and particle physics, giving our students the opportunity to explore some of the most cutting-edge areas of science. A level teaching is split between two teachers, with each teacher delivering four periods per week.

In addition to our excellent faculty and cutting-edge curriculum, we also provide extensive practical work in our teaching of physics. We believe that hands-on experience is crucial to truly understanding the principles of physics, and our well-resourced laboratories allow us to fully utilise this approach.

Studying physics at A level not only gives you a strong foundation for a wide range of degree programmes and careers, but it also teaches you valuable skills and ways of thinking that are highly valued by employers. You will become a critical and creative thinker, able to solve complex problems with ease.

We are passionate about providing high-quality education and support to all our students. With expertise and guidance, you can be confident that you will receive an excellent grounding in physics that will prepare you for success in whatever path you choose.

Physics A level opens a wide range of opportunities for further study and career paths. Many students choose to continue with physics after their A levels, pursuing degrees in topics like theoretical physics, astrophysics, or geophysics. Others use their physics background to enter related fields such as engineering and architecture. An A level in physics is also excellent preparations for degrees in chemistry, biology or mathematics, as well as providing a strong foundation for careers in, design, computing, sports science, medicine, economics and law.

Join us to explore the fascinating world of physics and discover your full potential.

“The teachers always strive to make the lesson as interesting for us as possible. Practical lessons were, in particular, very enjoyable”
“I loved the astrophysics topic the most; it was really interesting and cool”
"I look forward to my physics lessons every week. They are light-hearted and fun but we always do mounds of work."
"The teachers are always willing to give up their spare time to ensure every single student feels completely comfortable with the material covered."

Academic enrichment

We believe in fostering a love of physics through hands-on experiences and exciting opportunities. You can compete in both the theory and practical project categories of the British Physics Olympiad, the latter providing an opportunity to conduct your own independent research projects.

We encourage student leadership by providing opportunities to lead activities for the Year 7 Science Club, provide support for Lower School CREST club, or support the Royal Society Young People’s Book Prize judging panel.

For those who aspire to study at Oxbridge, we offer bespoke sessions to help prepare them for the rigorous admissions process. Additionally, our weekly enrichment club ‘Beyond the Curriculum’ provides even more opportunities for you to delve deeper into the wonder of physics – be that complex theories, or how physics is portrayed in popular culture.

We also take learning outside the classroom through attendance at public lectures and trips to places like the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) and JET Culham. For those interested in engineering, our participation in the Engineering Enrichment Scheme gives you hands on experience of real-world engineering projects, working with early career engineers at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Our Engineering Society provides real-life project work opportunities with local firms in Lower Sixth, and hosts whole school events to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day in June.
