Year 10-Upper sixth
Law Society is an opportunity for budding lawyers to understand the intricacies of the UK legal world. Led by Miss Nye, who was a practising barrister for 10 years, Law Society is designed to give students an insight into a field that can be misunderstood through the media. We discuss career paths and progression, current affairs and legal arguments.

An opportunity for students to develop their drawing skills.
Years 9-10
Literati, like Senior literature society, explores aspects of literature and language that students are less likely to come across in lessons, from Old English riddles, to graphic novels, to the etymological trends in ‘Swifties’ culture.
Sixth Form
Livermorium Club is an opportunity for students to extend their chemistry knowledge and explore problem-solving aspects beyond A level as well as prepare for the Chemistry Olympiad.
Years 7–8
Lower School Choir is open to anyone in Years 7 and 8 who enjoys singing. It performs at various events throughout the year.
Years 7–8
Each week a different member of the MFL Department works with students on a range of different linguistic and cultural experiences. Activities include looking at music in different languages, creating Venetian carnival masks, making Matisse cut-outs and working at a Spanish ice cream stand.

This offers the opportunity for Lower School students to take part in a play or musical. There are opportunities to be involved either on stage as a performer or as part of the backstage team.
Years 10-Upper sixth
Maths society is an opportunity for students to explore mathematical ideas beyond the syllabus, stretch your creativity and prepare for competitions and University entrance.
Lower Sixth
A weekly session for Lower Sixth students wishing to apply to study medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry and other healthcare options at university. UKCAT/BMAT preparation sessions are also provided.
Years 10–11
An opportunity to find out about and discuss all things political. No previous knowledge is expected.
Years 9–11
This is usually a play, performed towards the end of Michaelmas term. It offers students the opportunity to work collaboratively as part of a team. Students can develop their skills both on stage as actors and backstage as crew.
Years 9-11
This is an opportunity for Middle School students to explore what Psychology is, to take part in replications of research studies, and to develop their curiosity about why humans behave the way the way they do.
Years 9–Upper Sixth
This exciting simulation of the United Nations develops research and debate skills. Teams take on the roles of member countries to propose
and discuss a range of resolutions. We take part in a number of MUN conferences over the year.
Years 5–Upper Sixth
Classes designed to help those who wish to improve their aural skills.
Grades 1–5
A number of classes covering the basics of music theory and preparing students for ABRSM Grade 5 theory. An advanced (postGrade 5) class is also available on request.
Years 8–Upper Sixth
An opportunity for students to learn and perform old favourites and new West End tunes. They perform in the Musical Theatre Evening in May.
Years 5–Upper Sixth
Specialist coaches work with teams of all age groups who play regular fixtures against local schools. St Helen’s enjoys significant success at county, regional and national levels, regularly being crowned county champions at various age groups and progressing to regional and national finals.
Years 9–11
Nobelium places an emphasis on practical work and demonstrations to enthuse and extend our GCSE students. Cross-curricular links with other departments are also explored, for example, when learning about the chemistry of photography.

Year 11-Upper sixth
Pankhurst Society is an opportunity to explore your love of History beyond the IGCSE and A-level course. This is the club for those who want to do their own historical research and share their findings with like-minded enthusiasts. We also discuss History at A-level and wider historical issues and debates
Sixth Form
Senior Philosophy Society offers the opportunity to discuss the philosophical issues behind current news items. It is open to anyone in Sixth Form,
irrespective of subjects chosen for A level.
Year 11-Upper Sixth
A chance really to explore the intriguing, realworld applications of physics, from physics in popular culture to ground-breaking physics in the news, the history of physics, and so much more.
Years 7-9
Pi Club focuses on different aspects of mathematics such as paper folding and maths art, participating in Simon Singh’s parallelograms and team maths challenge preparation.
Years 7–9
The annual Playwriting Competition is open to students in Years 7–9. This is an opportunity for all budding playwrights to develop their own script. The winning entrant works with the support of a member of the drama staff to put on their play as a lunchtime production.
Year 7-Upper sixth
A space to explore the power and beauty of poetry in all its forms, where students can share a favourite poem, showcase something they’ve written, or simply soak in the creativity of others.
Year 5-Upper sixth
A chance to perform as an instrumentalist or singer in a band and to participate in a number of events at school and at other local schools.
Sixth form
There are a variety of enrichment opportunities offered, including lectures from expert speakers, visits to and from local university departments, as well as discussion of how psychology helps us make sense of current affairs and the world around us.

Make time to relax and read fiction of your choice in a tranquil environment.

Opportunities to build robots from kits, modify to suit your own aims and code to compete in national and international competitions.

Rugby is taught in the PE curriculum and fixtures in touch-rugby take place with local schools.
Years 5–Upper Sixth
Year 5 and 6 students learn to sail in their curriculum lessons. Other students learning to sail do so in pairs in Picos. We also have use of Laser Funboats and Fireflies depending on conditions and ability of the sailor; this activity carries an additional cost.
Upper Sixth
The Saxophone Ensembles perform at a variety of events and always feature at the Jazz Evening and the summer Jazz Afternoon.
